Chapter twenty-three

Kayden
I opened my eyes and my first thought was fuck the world. Didn't know the time but I was still pissed from yesterday. I sat up and rubbed my tired eyes. I looked at my Blackberry and saw a good 25 texts all from different people, and like 50 heads pinging me wishing me a happy birthday. Felt blessed and everything but to me it was a normal day. People need to sekkle down. Not a good day to be having a birthday when my auntie was literally lying in her death bed waiting to die. No, it doesn't work, so fuck the world.
I got up and went to my drawer. I opened it up, took the rizla out, some crow, and started rolling it up. I did it every morning to prepare myself for the evening. I heard my phone vibrate. I sighed and picked it up. I noticed the name then answered.
"Yeah."
"Happy birthday prick!"
I sighed. "Mm, thanks, Ree."
She paused. "What's wrong?"
I fiddled with my freshly made zoot and peered out the window. "Nothin', just woke up."
"Now? It's nearly 1:30."
"Yeah."
She tutted. "Be happy!"
"Mm." I got my lighter out and began flicking my finger over the roller, making flames come out.
"Ahh, fuck you then."
"It's just not a good day for me. All I can think of is Aunt Tanisha."
She sighed deeply. "I know how you feel, but she would want you to enjoy today."
I considered this. "Yeah. You're right."
"Of course I am. Is it your day off?"
"Yeah."
"I'll come round after my shift."
Just hearing that made me a little happier. "Alright."
"Be prepared for some birthday beats." I chuckled lightly. "See you soon."
"Bye, Ree."
I locked off and dropped my phone on the bed. I rubbed my face, left my room and headed downstairs. Everyone was in the kitchen getting ready for the long day ahead. They all smiled as I entered.
"Happy birthday!" Mum was close to me in an instant, kissing my cheek repeatedly. She used to do it when I was younger. I don't think she understands that I've grown out of that now, but I decided to let her have her moment. She smiled and hugged me tight. "Big man, celebrating your 18th. I'm so happy for you." I gave a weak smile and dad slapped me hard on the back.
"How d'you feel?" I shrugged and they both laughed.
"Happy birthday, Kayden," Zaine chimed. He spudded me and I pulled his hair. He laughed and handed me a homemade card.
I smiled at the gesture. "Safe lil man." I pulled his plait and he screwed.
"Stop man!" It was always fun to anger him.
Mum handed me a card and kissed me on the cheek once more. I ended up with £350, new clothes, and some exclusive football boots: don't think dads realised I've stopped playing football, but fuck it.
I thanked them all and gave them a hug before heading back upstairs. I put everything away then grabbed my towel and went in the shower. After twenty minutes I came out and got changed to a plain white shirt and black jeans, red Lyle & Scott cardigan and red Vans. I put my diamond stud in and looked in the mirror. Need to make an effort just for today, and then I can go see Aunt Tanisha tomorrow.
I grabbed my red New York hat and went back downstairs. Dad came into the hallway and smiled. It pissed me off that everyone was happy and smiling as if Aunt Tanisha wasn't going through her own shit right now. It wasn't fair.
"Listen, I know how you're feeling right now, but today's your day. You have to try and enjoy it."
"You're all acting like she's not fucking dying of cancer."
He gave me a stern look. "Oi, we're all concerned about her, you know we are. For now it's about you. Don't give me lip, Kayden."
I leaned against the wall and stared at him with folded arms. "Aight," I replied with a blank face.
He sighed. "What's the one thing that you've wanted for a long time?"
Ree?
I shrugged. "Dunno."
He rolled his eyes. "Remember last year, you wanted a car. Am I right?"
"Yeah, why?"
He went to the door and opened it. "Your presents aren't over yet Kayden. You want a car or not?"
I blinked dumbly. "What?"
"You finished your lessons last year, we got all the documents, let's go get you a car."
I smirked. "Swear down, you're gonna get me one?"
"Come on." I laughed and we left the house and hopped into dad's car. He started the engine and looked at me. "Today I'm gonna take you to get your very first car, as long as you promise to look after it and be responsible."
I nodded slowly. "Always am." He gave me a look and I smiled in return.
He put his seatbelt on and began driving. I sat back and enjoyed the journey. Now things were beginning to look up since I was finally getting a car. I won't have to rely on public transport anymore; knowing that made me smile. However, I couldn't help but think back to them man and the fact that they were planning to go after Dean's family.
For what reason? What purpose?
That won't do anything, just make tings worse. They were sick in the head to even consider it. People need to check themselves and fucking fix up. Kidnapping little children was the lowest of the low. I knew each and every one of them had younger siblings. I doubt Nicholas would spud me if I decided to torture his little sister, so they should allow it. The thought of harming that little girl who lived with Dean, it made me sick. I'd step in and help Dean if I had to; they aren’t doing shit to anyone as far as I'm concerned.
Marik can try his worst, nothing will affect me, and he’d be wasting his time. I knew his strengths and weaknesses, let's see him try shit. Dad won't even have to get involved, it wouldn't be hard to just pin him down and stamp on his fucking face. I've been obeying that prick for three whole years, and for what?
Money? Crow?
All the luxuries in the world wouldn't bring me back to that worthless piece of shit. How about getting a job and starting a family? Not hiring teenagers to run around and do your dirty errands for you. That doesn't make you a man, it doesn't make you big. Makes you look weak if anything. Just like Biggz. If I had him in front of me right now I'd snap his fucking neck and feed him to Uncle Ryan's dogs. He was another worthless cunt. Had the audacity to abuse Aunt Kamillah and make Aaliyah's life hell. How the fuck you gonna hit a woman?
I've had dreams, vivid dreams of getting back every man that's fucked around with me and the people I love. I'd line them up, one next to the other, and then shoot them in the centre of the forehead, one by one. I'd smile afterwards and go back home to Ree and our children. That's was the perfect dream. Fuck, it could become a reality if I play my cards right. Everyone just needs to back off and let me run my own life from now, starting from today.
I closed my eyes and thought of Ree. I couldn't even speak to her yesterday since I was with them pricks. It was hard being away from her, as we were used to being in each other’s company. It's as if every time I'm pissed off, she calls. Just a case of bad timing init.
"Tanisha's strong. She'll hang on," I heard him say. I opened my eyes and turned to dad who was watching me. I realised we were stuck in traffic. Must've assumed that I was thinking about her.
"I know," I mumbled.
"Today's about you, Kayden."
"Yeah, wish it wasn't." He smiled weakly and we eventually got there. After a few minutes we were led to the show room. Not gonna lie, I saw some sexy cars, none of them second hand. Nice and fresh. I smirked and dad laughed.
"Choose wisely," he warned. I looked around and spotted a Golf. It was silver, nice, but couldn't see myself in it. It was more mum’s type.
"What about this?" I turned and saw dad stroking the bonnet of a red Renault. I shook my head and we continued searching. Way too many cars. It was like being in a rave with a room-full of chicks: you can't choose, but you wanna be inside every single one of them. That's when my eye caught it. Black Pegueot 207. I smiled and touched the bonnet. Dad noticed my attraction and approached the car.
"Like this one?"
"She's sexy, dad."
He laughed. "She?"
"Yeah, it's a she. I need this car."
"Calm down." He called over a salesman, who was excited that someone was willing to buy.
"Would you like to take it for a test drive, sir?"
"Yeah, yeah." He handed me the keys and I opened the car and sat inside.
I sniffed and exhaled; it was just sexy, everything about it. The chairs were nice and soft. I stroked the driver's seat. Ree's legs were better, at least now I could stroke both. I ended up driving through the streets and on the M25 to get a clear understanding of how the car worked. My driving wasn't rusty at all, I had gotten used to it already. I loved it man, cruising with the window down and being relaxed for once in a good five months. In the end I agreed to buy, we sorted out everything; the MOT, road tax, car insurance, all my documents.
The salesman checked my licence and smiled. "You're going to love this car sir. 15 inch wheels, aux input for external music devices, electric front windows which are 'one touch' for your benefit. Remote control central locking with deadlocks-..."
"How much nuh?" Dad cut in.
"£7,995." We both whistled in unison. Dad sighed and went in his pocket then fished out a thick wad of cash. Shit.
"Gotta pay for mortgage, Zaine's football club, fucking electricity, bills, my wife's needs, now this car? What, am I gonna have to pull money out my backside?" Dad muttered under his breath. He separated the money and was about to hand it over.
"If you're gonna pay cash, I will reduce the amount by £600."
Dad smiled. "Yeah, man."
"£7,395 then sir." He paid for the car and I filled out all the necessary forms. It was such a long process.
Eventually I got my Pegueot, it was like heaven. We both sat inside and I was busy stroking the seat slowly whilst thinking of Ree's legs. I couldn't ask for anything more. Dad laughed and watched me as I admired the new car.
"You gonna follow me back home?"
"In this? Yeah." I felt the wheel and licked my lips.
He laughed and got out, then entered his own which was parked in front of mine. I started up the car and dad began to drive, I followed behind. We were soon on the motorway and I was enjoying the breeze. Feeling better now, considering I got my first car which I didn't have to pay shit for, but I was grateful.
The engine purred smoothly as I glided along the road. I'm falling in love with this ting man, love at first sight, it was strong. I smiled as we got closer to home. It was easy to follow dad's path, I smirked the whole way. To think I was just gonna jam at yard today. Dad was right, today was my day, and I was gonna enjoy it.

Becca
"Have a nice day." I smiled at the purchaser, some old woman, looked about in her 60's. Fuck knows what she was doing in here, but whatever. She smiled in appreciation.
"Thank you, deary." She patted my hand and walked out. I blinked and started after her.
It was a long, boring shift. As usual I waited behind the counter doing fuck all, but I suppose I was used to it now. I had an hour left in this shit hole. Stacey wasn't even in today, so I had no-one to converse with. And Kayden, that sexy prick, he should be enjoying this day. I mean, it’s his birthday for Gods sake. I'd be over the moon...
Actually, I wouldn't.
But this isn't about me. This was his only chance to turn eighteen, so he needs to make it last. Maybe go to a strip club or something, shit. I thought to myself for awhile. I wanted him here next to me; so I can smell his sweet scent and hear his husky voice in my ear, and feel his soft lips on my neck...
Okay, I should calm down.
At least the bet was long gone, now I could do whatever I want. Like cuss him and pull his hair. I loved the feeling of power—it was sweet—but revenge was even sweeter. Dunno how Olivia was coping in that bin, I'd feel sorry for her if the bin men came and took her away. That would be hilarious! I noticed someone was stood before me. I looked up and screwed. Hayden. What the hell did he want?
"I don't serve dickheads. Move."
"I came here to warn you."
I raised an eyebrow. "About?"
"You think I don't know what you did to Shanay?"
"Your little friend started it. Therefore it was only fair that she faced the consequences. Look how long ago that was. I ain't got time for people like her, or you."
"She isn't letting this go, and neither am I. You're lucky we're surrounded by a lot of people, Rebecca."
I scoffed. "That shouldn't stop you. It didn't stop me from punching your precious girl in the face. Fucking hit me if you're bad, Hayden."
His eyes narrowed. "Is that a challenge?"
"No, it's an opportunity. Hit me. Go on. Attack me, big man." I waited patiently.
His screw deepened. "Another day init, you'll get your comeuppance."
"You don't even know the meaning of the word, you paigon."
"This isn't all I came here for. You better tell Kayden to watch his back as well."
I blinked in awe. "How do you know him?"
"Don't watch that. He fucked around wid the wrong people. Him and his boys, they're all gonna get what's fucking coming to them." He grabbed my collar and pulled me closer. "Your man's gonna get it the worst," he whispered in my ear.
I pulled away from his grip and regarded him. He gave me a cold glare before turning around and leaving. What the fuck? What did Kayden and his friends do? Am I missing something here? How did he even know that I knew Kayden? My jaw clenched. I bet it was that bitch, Shanay. I stared into space and wondered what Hayden's harsh words meant. Kayden's gonna get it the worst. What did he mean by it? What are they going to do to him? I sighed.
"Something wrong, Rebecca?" a new worker, Natasha asked. She was dark skinned with curly black hair that rested neatly on her shoulders. I liked her sense of style, it was quite awesome. Only thing is she was in her twenties: she was one of the oldest workers in this dump.
I slowly turned to her. "Nah, everything's cool. What about you?"
"Ahh I'm fine. You looked troubled, though."
"I was just in deep thought, don't worry." She laughed and went through the back doors. I continued thinking about what Hayden said. It was now stuck on my brain, and I was beginning to dread the worst...
I arrived at his door and inhaled a great breath. I lifted my hand up to press the doorbell but a car horn stopped me in my tracks. The hell? I spun around to saw a fresh, pimped out, brand new car. Not only that, but the prick was sat inside. I couldn't believe it. My mouth actually dropped. You mean to tell me that I've been waiting forever to get driving lessons and this dipshit buys a fucking car?
I approached slowly, taking in every detail. It was fresh; it suited him unfortunately. He appeared like a proper grown man, sat there with the window down and one arm hanging out. As I got closer I noticed he wore that famous slanted smirk. He looked so sexy, especially with the hat he wore that was tilted to the left. The look suited him. I stood there completely amazed.
"You got a car?" I asked quietly. Dumb question.
"Pegueot 207." Fucking show off. He stroked the seat and smirked to himself. Shit, he was looking fly right now. "Hop in."
I opened the car door and sat inside. The seat was so soft and cushiony on my backside. Everything was clean and fresh. I could live in here! I sniffed and exhaled. "Love the car smell," I muttered. He smiled and looked mysterious with the New York cap covering his eyes. "Who got you this?"
"Dad." Mr Brooks needs to adopt me.
"Whoa." I stroked the dashboard. "How much was it?"
His dimple showed faintly. "A lot," was all he answered, running his fingers over the steering wheel slowly.
"It's wicked," I said in admiration.
He turned to me. I could barely see his eyes now; just his nose and lips, not to mention that damn dimple. "Jealous?"
"Fuck you."
He laughed lightly. "Only joking, Ree, your time will come soon."
"Hmph." He smiled and carried on stroking the wheel in a very sexual manner. It made me wonder if he'd ever have sex with this thing if it were possible. Probably would. "How long have you been sat in here?"
He shrugged. "’Bout an hour. Too many kids in the house, I had to get out."
I raised a brow. "Kids?"
"Cousins, mostly from my dad’s side. They all cling to me and pull my hair." He sighed and shivered at the memory.
I laughed and shook my head. Seems like I’m not the only one who bully’s Kayden. He then turned on the radio, went into the glove compartment full of CD's, and picked out one.
"Listen to this," he said quietly. He inserted the CD and KCI & JOJO - Crazy began to play. He turned the dial to boost the volume and looked at me.
Why?
He began clicking his fingers and singing along to it. "Baby I apologise for all the things I done, that I done!" He grabbed onto my hand and sang to me. "See I know, I've been a fool, for far tooo loonnnggg!" He was passionate and getting into the song. I laughed. "Baby you had to go and run away, just come back to papa, please baby baby won't you stayyy!" I started creasing. He was so gay! He smirked. "This tune's bad Ree, getting man emotional." I laughed and he turned it down slightly.
"Battyman," I sniggered.
"A battyman that's fingered you, twice."
"Hush your mouth."
He laughed. "I'ma take you for a spin." He revved the engine and I gulped, now feeling wary.
"You sure you know how to drive this thing?"
He rolled his eyes. "Had my lessons a long time ago. Don't worry, you trust me."
"I might trust you, but I don't know shit about your driving!"
He smiled and lifted his hat up. "I won't kill you." Gee, thanks.
"I can't be so sure of that."
"Do we have to do the trust exercise again, Ree?"
"The what?" He smirked and I instantly understood what he was referring to. "Dick'ead."
He chuckled. "You won't die," he reassured me.
I nodded slowly and clutched onto the seat. He put the car into gear and revved the engine once more. By now I was shitting myself.  Seriously, what if we both die? I'd hunt his ass down in spirit, I swear! He began driving down the road, quite expertly in fact. I was amazed.
"Ahh! You're driving..." I muttered in awe.
"You really didn't believe me, did you?"
"No."
He smiled. "I'll take you round the block," he mused, turning to me.
"Keep your eyes on the road you prat!"
He smirked. "I'd rather look at you."
"Kayden!"
He chuckled and looked back towards the road. I kissed my teeth and soon we were cruising along, listening to the smooth R&B that emitted from the radio. Soon we were caught up in traffic. I took this as an opportunity to grab his hat and place it on my head. He gave me a look of warning.
"You ain't keeping that."
"You sure, big man?"
"I'm positive."
"We'll see. This shit is mine now." I grinned and he nodded slowly.
"It's cool, I have Sacha now anyway."
I paused and felt my anger begin to boil. "Who?!"
He stroked the dashboard and smiled. "S.A.C.H.A. Sexy Affordable Car Hindering Attention."
I blinked and stared at him for ages. "You...named your car?"
"She's only just begun to experience the outside world. You have to treat her with respect."
I watched him blankly. "It's a car."
"She's the new ting in my life. She's easy too; she loves me. I'm already inside her." He smirked and I screwed in disgust.
"It's a fucking car, not a woman!"
He gasped and stroked the wheel. "Don't listen to her Sach, she doesn’t know what she's talking about," he whispered to the dashboard.
"You're gonna choose a car over me?" He continued to drive, ignoring the question completely. I kissed my teeth. "I'll get out, I swear."
"Why do you care so much?"
"It's a car!"
"Her name's Sacha."
"It's not a she!"
He smirked. "You're gonna have to fight for my love."
I rolled my eyes. He took me more than around the block. This bastard drove everywhere. He decided to cover most roads around the area, but it was really relaxing. I was wondering whether or not it was a good time to mention Hayden, but then I thought better of it. I thought of Olivia instead.
"Kayden..."
"Hm?" he grunted, now changing the CD.
"You said twenty-two you fucked and only two you made love to, right?" He nodded slowly, not sure where I was going with this. "Who's the two that you made love to?"
He chuckled. "Why?"
"Answer the damn question."
"Some girl Jayne, and Aaliyah."
My eyes widened. "What? Aaliyah?" He nodded slowly as he used one hand on the wheel. "I thought you were friends?"
"Still are."
"But...so, you two were together at some point?"
"Nah."
"So...you...huh? What the fuck?"
He laughed at my confusion. "Back in year ten. I still don't regret it, though."
I watched him intently. "What happened?"
"She didn't wanna lose it to anyone else, and I loved her, so I was willing. It wasn't planned or anything. We were both at hers talking, one thing led to another and..." He shrugged. Hmph.
"So she was your first?"
"Nah, lost it at thirteen."
I sputtered and choked on my saliva. "THIRTEEN?!"
He laughed at my facial expression. "Things happen, Ree."
"You sick bastard." I screwed.
"This one girl claimed she liked me. Linked her once or twice, second time she let it happen. I weren't complaining." I shuddered. Sex at thirteen...madness.
"That's...interesting."
"Yeah, was interesting for me at the time."
"No wonder you've fucked twenty-two girls."
"You make me sound like some rapist. Twenty-two isn't a lot."
I looked out the window. "That's what you think, fucking nympho."
He laughed. "I can go without sex. I don't need it."
I rolled my eyes. "Sure."
"Seriously. It's been nearly seven months now." I glanced at him to check if he was lying, or perhaps joking. He kept a straight, rigid face. Oh shit, he was serious.
"But why?" He turned up the music and avoided the question. I raised a brow and turned the volume back down, giving him a stern look in return. "Why?" I asked again.
He sighed heavily. "Ever since I met you, I haven't looked at another girl, and I haven’t had sex either."
I paused at the revelation. "Oh," I muttered. What could I say? To hear something like that was shocking. Like he was saving himself for me...but why should he? He peered ahead as he drove and I decided to change the subject to rid of the awkward silence. "So, you enjoying your day so far?"
"Now that you're with me," he said quietly. He rested his hand on my leg and rubbed it gently. "Sorry about yesterday, I was pissed off."
"It's okay, but maybe you should keep both hands on the wheel," I mumbled staring at the road ahead.
He laughed quietly and brought his hand back onto the wheel. "You think I'm gonna crash?"
"Yeah." He suddenly swerved the car and almost hit a tree. I screamed and covered my eyes. "Oh my God, Kayden!" He laughed hysterically. I gulped and quickly put my seatbelt on, something I should've done a long time ago. "This was a bad idea, you're gonna fucking kill us both you twat."
He sniggered. "You keep doubting me. Maybe I should do it again."
I shot him a cold glare. "No! Don't you dare!"
He smirked and decided to spare me. I sighed in relief and was glad we made it back to his without dying. He parked the car in the same spot outside. I placed my hand on my chest; my heart was thumping. He was still laughing at me like this shit was funny. When I take control of the wheel and drive into a brick wall, we'll see if he's laughing then. Prick.
"Your face!" He carried on laughing.
"Am I laughing? I'm never getting back in this car."
He sighed happily. "N'aww, is my baby all shaken up?" I kissed my teeth. "Come Ree, I didn't mean to scare you." He pulled me closer and kissed my lips gently. I reluctantly kissed him back and he held my face as the kiss deepened. He rubbed my thigh and I sighed into his mouth but came to a halt as a sudden knock was heard on the window. Christian. I raised a brow. He was grinning from ear to ear like some retard.
"You got a car! Fucking brilliant man!" He opened the car door and slid in the back. Kayden looked at him through the rear-view mirror. Now he was serious.
"You still gonna chat to me after what I said?" he asked quietly.
Chris shrugged. "I was on your side from the beginning. What they're doing is wrong."
He nodded slowly. "Where they gone now?"
"Searching." He shook his head and kissed his teeth.
I had no idea what they were talkin about, but I wanted to know. What if it was to do with Hayden?
Chris cleared his throat. "Nice car man," he stroked the seat. "Sexy. I'd beat in this."
I laughed. "You're gonna make a man very happy one day, Chrissy."
He screwed me instantly. "I'm not gay!" Kayden laughed lightly and he kissed his teeth.
"Come, let's go inside." He took his keys out the ignition and we all went inside. As soon as we stepped in, there was a lively vibe. There were kids everywhere running about and creating a huge amount of noise. Relatives were scattered, people I didn't even know or have never seen before. I didn't know his family was this large.
"Rarh," Chris muttered.
Three young girls ran up to Kayden and smiled, gripping onto his clothes. I missed the days when Andre was that little. "Kayden!" they all yelped in unison.
"You saw me half an hour ago," he replied blankly. He was already stressed and we had just stepped inside. Good. The eldest one—age ten or eleven—squeezed him tightly and grinned.
"Happy birthday," she chimed with a huge smile.
He ruffled her hair. "Thanks, Shavonne. Where's your dad?"
"With mum." He nodded and bent down to her level.
"I'll be giving you the present very soon," he said softly. She nodded and he gave her a hug. It was really cute to witness, I couldn't help but smile. I learned that the girl was his little cousin, Tanisha's daughter. She seemed extremely content for someone whose mum has cancer.
Chris went straight to the living-room as I headed to the kitchen to say hello. It was packed with children and grown women, supposedly their mums. It was madness. Mrs Brooks approached and hugged me. It was good to see a broad smile on her face for once.
"Rebecca, how are you?"
I smiled. "Fine, just here to celebrate."
"Who's this, Riah?" one middle aged woman asked.
Sha’riah turned to her. "Rebecca: she's all Kayden talks about."
The woman smiled and gave me a brief hug. "Nice to meet you, Rebecca. I'm Kamillah." She was a pretty mixed-race woman with lovely green eyes and long brown hair.
I gave an amiable smile. "Nice to meet you."
"Auntie, I'm hungry!" a young child clung to her shirt.
"Dinner soon come, darling. Go and find Kayden, he wants to play with you."
The girl smiled and all the children ran out the kitchen. I laughed at the blatant lie.
"So, Rebecca, are you and my Godson serious then?" Kamillah picked up her glass of Vodka and coke then sipped it slowly as she watched me.
I quickly shook my head. "No, nothing like that. We're just friends."
"You should hear them at night Kam, they think we can't hear." Sha'riah winked at me and my eyes widened. Oh God, no. They all laughed.
"They're at that stage, heh?" one woman said.
"Be careful, I'm sure you youngsters know about contraception?" Kamillah gave me a look.
OH FOR FUCKS SAKE.
"It's not like that," I claimed firmly.
"That's what they all say." They laughed and I scratched my head. Now I was embarrassed. They began talking about our future marriage and who the bridesmaids will be. I quickly exited before they revealed any more ridiculous plans. It's been more than five months and people still thought I was with this dipshit when I clearly wasn't. I sighed and headed upstairs. When will people get it through their head that I didn't see him that way?

Kayden
I was getting bullied by all these little children. Dunno how they got me on the floor to begin with, but they were all hugging me and pulling my hair like they always did whenever they came round. Zaine sat there laughing at my misery and refused to help. I was having a hard time standing up.
"Alright, stop now!" I warned. They all laughed and Josh poked my nose. I sighed. "I'm giving you lot to the count of five."
"You can't count to 5," Hannah said. They all laughed and continued to jump on me.
I breathed deeply. "I'm gonna get the Hulk on you lot. One...two...three..." They all screamed and quickly ran out the room, thinking I'll chase after them. I kissed my teeth and got up. Ree had disappeared, probably upstairs wid Chris. I dusted myself off and my phone went. I screwed before answering. "What the fuck do you want?"
"H-Help me."
I raised a brow. "What?"
"I'm locked in here. Help me, please." She coughed.
I kissed my teeth. "Delete this number, Olivia, I ain't joking." I locked off. This was the last time I allowed the bitch to call me. I thought I had blocked her number a long time ago.
Time to get a new number.
There was a knock at the door. I went to answer it. Ms. Lewis stood there with Erica and Riana. I smiled and they stepped in. Auntie hugged me and kissed me on the cheek.
"Happy birthday, big man. Is that your car outside?" I nodded and Riana smiled.
"Happy eighteenth! Here." She gave me a card and a wrapped present, along with a bottle of wine. I smiled in gratitude and kissed her on cheek.
"Safe yeah?" She smiled and they both walked off into the kitchen.
I glanced down at Erica who was stood there looking confused. I remember when I had seen her in Footlocker; she acted as if she didn't know who I was. It was weird; she was used to my company. I've known her since she was young, aunt Tanisha would always bring her round since her and Ms. Lewis were close friends. She was like a cousin to me, and now she was scared?
"Long time no see, lil one. Where you been hiding?"
She scratched her arm nervously. "Nowhere in particular. Erm, happy birthday." I smiled and pulled her into a hug. She seemed so fragile now, just like Aaliyah. I heard footsteps and looked to see Philippa and Daniel watching me from the top of the stairs.
I screwed. "I'm calling Hulk now, watch. He's gonna come and eat you all. You better hide." They screamed and ran away. I laughed; as if I'd have Hulks' number. I told Erica to make herself at home and answered the incoming call. "D?"
"Happy birthday, man."
"You ghosted for about two months. What happened?"
"Nothin', just laying low. What you saying, though, you having a good time yeah?"
"Yeah, safe. Where you now?"
"With Alicia."
"Tell her I said hi."
"Yeah, she said happy birthday."
"Chris couldn't get through to you before."
"Mm, been busy init." Hmm...
"Seen.
"I'll bell you back yeah?"
"Aight."
He locked off and I shook my head. That boy was too secretive. I went into the kitchen and got some Jack Daniels out the fridge. Mum sat at the table with all the aunties and other women, like a whole bunch of them. They were like a cult whenever they got together; discussing husbands and children etc. They all smiled at me as I closed the fridge door.
"Birthday boy!" Aunt Kamillah bellowed. I laughed, trust her to be enthusiastic.
"You should have seen him this morning, Kam. Lord, I've never seen anything like it." Mum gave me a look as she took more sips of her Blossom Hill.
Aunt Kam laughed in return. "What is it, don't you like being a man, Kayden?"
I smiled. "Course I do. I was just tired. I'm not a morning person."
Mum rolled her eyes. "So he says."
"How's Erica doing?" Paulette asked Auntie Anita, who sighed in return.
"She's improving, but giving me a lot of grief."
Mum tutted. "This amnesia thing, how much longer will it carry on for?"
I raised a brow. "She has amnesia?"
Auntie Ann nodded. "She's had it for a while now, didn't you know?"
"No-one told me." I looked suggestively towards mum.
"Must've slipped my mind."
"Yes, it's all the stress dear, nevermind." Auntie Ann patted mums hand.
"That must be terrible. I wish her all the best." Lynette comforted Auntie Ann with a pat on the back. No wonder Erica's been acting all lost lately. Poor girl didn't remember a thing.
"You gonna take me for a spin in your car then, Kayden?" Aunt Kamillah asked.
I laughed with a nod. "Whenever you’re ready."
"Hmm, no doubt you already let Rebecca have a turn first." I turned to mum who gave me a smirk in return. I swear, she loves spreading shit.
"Mum man." I kissed my teeth. They all laughed and cooed.
"Don't be embarrassed, she's a lovely girl," Laura said with a wink. I sighed and mum stood up to hug me.
"You take good care of her, son."
"I plan to," I muttered.
"A good girl won't tolerate one thing though. When are you cutting that hair, boy? Seriously." Heather screwed me. She was the worst of mum’s friends, an angry black woman. Ever since she met me she's wanted to cut my hair, yet she likes Zaine's. The fuckeries this woman puts me through.
I laughed and cleared my throat. "Not any time soon," I answered pouring the Jack Daniels into separate glasses.
"Sha'riah, I keep telling this boy time and time again..." she began. I sighed and quickly walked out before she gave me a lecture about having hair like a girl. Who even invited her here? I bumped into Erica who still seemed very lost, and now I understood why.
"Erm...where's the bathroom?"
I smiled. "I know about your amnesia, why didn't you just say?"
She blinked repeatedly. "Who told you?"
"Your mum." She sighed.
"I don’t want people to know, they'll think I'm weird."
"You shouldn't care what people think." She looked away and scratched her arm, one of her nervous traits. "Upstairs, second door on the left." She nodded her thanks before heading upstairs.
Time flew by quickly. It was roughly ten-thirty in the evening and most relatives had gone. I had introduced Ree to Riana and Erica and they got on well, which was good. Eventually they left. I was still enjoying myself, considering I had all my loved ones here with me; the people I cared about the most. I actually didn't want this day to end. I had given Chris too much alcohol, he couldn't even hack it.
"What do you see in a girl, Chris?" Ree asked him.
He gave her a look. "What d'you mean?"
"You claim that you're not gay, so what would a girl have to do to turn you on?"
He gave a brief shrug. "Anything."
"Elaborate."
He looked at me. "Tell your chick, Tempz." I laughed. Whenever someone mentioned a girl he became all defensive.
"Answer me you fucked up pigeon. It's a simple question!"
He closed his eyes and rested his head back. "I don't know."
"What you mean you don't know? Are you retarded or something? Prick, you obviously swing the wrong way if you don't know what turns you on. Or better yet: how you see a girl. If a beautiful girl was to approach you this very moment, what you gonna do?" He began to snore and she watched him with a grim face. She turned to me. "Do I talk that much?"
I smiled. "He has a short attention span." I looked over at Chris who snored deeply and scratched his crotch.
She kissed her teeth. "Bastard."
I laughed. "I actually had a good day; got some nice things."
"Mm, hold on." She dug into her pocket and pulled out a blue jewellery box. She handed it to me and I blinked in awe. She nodded, urging me on. I opened it to see an expensive-looking gold chain. A smile tugged at my lips.
"You didn't have to, Ree."
"Shut up and accept it, before I keep it for myself."
I laughed and slid it on. It was very weighty; I could tell it was expensive. "Right length aswell. How did you know?"
"Shh, just enjoy it."
I pulled her closer. "Thanks, I love it."
"That's like two months worth of salary I'll never get back."
I laughed and smoothed the hair out of her eyes. She was so beautiful it was unreal. I kissed her lips softly; she instantly responded and held my neck. We kissed slowly and deeply; feeling her tongue on mine was the best, it made me feel good inside. Right there and then I realised how much I wanted her. Right now.
I rested my hand on her inner thigh and stroked her, she moaned softly against my lips in response. One of the sexiest noises I've heard. I grunted. I couldn't stop even if I wanted to. I moved my hand further up her thigh, and then she pulled away.
"Not in front of Chris," she whispered.
"He's sleeping, Ree, I wanna have fun." I smirked and grabbed hold of her breast. She giggled and slapped my hand away.
"No, not now."
"So later?" She gave me a look and I kissed her neck. "I wanna go out."
Her brow rose. "What?"
"I wanna do something: go out. I wanna do something today, right now." I wanted to end this birthday with something exciting.
"What the fuck are you on about?"
I pecked her lips softly. "Get your jacket on," I ordered.
She rolled her eyes. "Why?"
"We're going out."
"Huh?"
I slapped Christian hard on the leg, causing him to jerk awake. "Get up, we're going out."
"Arhh, I’m comfortable," he grumbled tiredly, turning onto his side. I grabbed onto his leg and yanked him off the bed; he landed on the floor with a loud thud. Ree started laughing.
"We're going out," I said again.
He kissed his teeth and stood up then put his hoody on. Ree laughed and I eagerly pulled her out the room. We got downstairs and the atmosphere had turned quiet. I was relieved to see no more children running about, the only ones left were Zaine and Shavonne. I handed Ree her jacket, she gave me a look of disdain before sighing and slipping it on.
"You're forcing me to leave the yard. These times its freezing cold and late in the evening!" She kissed her teeth. I smiled and hugged her from behind as she zipped up her jacket.
"Something fun needs to happen before the day ends."
"Watch Sky movies," she tutted and I laughed.
"I love when you're frustrated, it turns me on." I kissed the nape of her neck.
"You're pissing me off. I shouldn't have to listen to you, you twat! Making me leave when its God knows what time and all these perverts are lurking around on road, looking to rape an innocent young girl who doesn't know any better."
"Ree..."
"Don't Ree me, you get me mad. You didn't even wanna do anything today and now when I'm relaxed you wanna...l-leave..." I sucked on her neck and bit it softly. It made her drift off and sigh in deprivation.
"We're gonna go out and have a good time, yeah?" I whispered on her neck. She nodded slowly and I smiled. "Good. Ey, Chris!" I heard heavy footsteps and Chris appeared at the top of the stairs, scratching his head absentmindedly.
"I'm coming man," he mumbled.
I went into the kitchen to see mum putting the wine away. "Mum, I'm taking these lot out for a drink."
She nodded and closed the fridge door. "That's fine; just don't come back too late. Make sure you have your keys."
"Yeah."
"And watch Christian: poor thing can't handle more than two glasses."
I chuckled. "Yeah, I'll keep an eye on him."
"Please."
I headed to the living-room. Zaine and Shavonne were too busy playing Wii Sports to notice what was happening. I shrugged and closed the door. Ree was stood there texting whilst Chris leaned against the front door with his eyes closed. I decided to call D and he answered right away.
"Cool, fam."
"Yeah, what you on?"
"Nu'in, just jammin still. You wid your fam yeah?"
"I'm about to leave now wid Ree and Chris."
"Where you lot going?"
"Out and about init. Birthday's almost over, I wanna do summin'."
He laughed. "I hear that."
"You coming?"
"Yeah, aight."
"I'll come get you."
"What, you got a whip?"
"Yeah, just today."
He chuckled again. "Ahh, say no more."
"In abit."
I locked off and slapped Chris' head. His eyes opened and he grunted. Ree laughed and we left the house. We got in the car and I drove straight to D's.
"It's cold, Kayden, I'm tired." Ree sighed and rested her head against the window.
"Shh, you'll be warm soon." I flashed her my favourite smile and she rolled her eyes.
"I just wanna sleep."
"You'll be able to, when we get back."
"Where are we even going?" I shrugged and she kissed her teeth. "Prick," she mumbled.
We soon got to Dwane's and I text him, telling him to come outside. He soon did and hopped in the car. He spudded Chris who was half dead and smiled at Ree, who gave a polite wave in return.
"Nice whip, man saw it shining from my window and ting."
I laughed and began to drive. "Where you been, D?"
I saw him shrug through the rear-view mirror. "Been busy wid tings init."
"What tings?"
"I won't go into that now. Where to fam?"
"Gonna go pick up Aaliyah."
Ree turned to me, a questioning glare on her face. "You sure that's wise?"
I shrugged. "She's important to me."
"She obviously has a problem with me, Kayden. I won't hesitate to tell her about herself if she gives me another dirty look."
"I'll talk to her."
We eventually got to Li's. I left the car and approached the front door. I rang the doorbell and she answered seconds later, surprised to see me stood there at all.
"What are you doing here?"
I raised a brow. "Not even a happy birthday?"
She gasped and hugged me tight. "I was gonna come over," she claimed as I held her.
"Why didn't you?"
"Too much company. I knew your house would be packed." I laughed and she pulled away. She saw the car and gasped. "Oh my, you got a car!"
I smirked. "Come, we're going out for a few hours."
She looked confused. "Where?"
"You'll see. Come." She quickly shook her head. "Why?"
"Is she in that car too?" she asked cautiously.
I looked back at the car to see them all watching intently through the window. I faced Aaliyah once again. "Does it matter?"
She sighed and ruffled her hair. "I really don't wanna put up with that."
"With what?"
She shook her head, dismissing the matter. "Nevermind. I'm not in the mood to go out right now."
I held her hand. "Don't make me have to carry you to the car myself."
She laughed lightly. "I don't want to."
"To celebrate my 18th Li. Don't be like that. You know I love you; I want you there with me. It wouldn't be the same. All these years spent for nothing? You wanna throw away our friendship because of Ree?"
She turned away and appeared hesitant. "No," she grumbled.
"Then come." She shook her head once again.
"I can't deal with this, Kayden. She's taking you away from me and you know it."
I blinked at her. "What are you talking about?"
She peered down nervously. "We barely spend time together like we used to. It's hard to even get in contact with you. I wanna see more of you and be just like how we used to, but when I call and I finally get through to you, who are you with?"
It made me think. I leaned against the door frame and folded my arms. "You really think she's replacing you?"
She shrugged and scratched her arm. "You turned me away, you know how I feel. You know my history and all that I've been through and you've always stuck by me. Now special Rebecca's here you don't call, you don't text, and you don't even come to see me. Do you know how that makes me feel? Worthless. Second best. You put her before me, even after the fact that we have more chemistry."
I sighed. I've never felt so shit before. "Just come, Li, we can talk about this afterwards."
She looked me in the eye and anxiously bit her lip. "Happy birthday, Kayden." She slowly closed the door and I was left there frozen. After a few seconds of accessing what had just happened, I went and got back in the car.
"Ain't she coming?" Chris asked.
"She's got things to do," I mumbled, starting the engine.
"At 11:32 in the evening?" I ignored him and began driving. Ree turned the radio on.
"Aye, Tempz, this whip’s sexy for real," I heard D comment.
I laughed. "Gotta go cop that quick before they raise the price."
"Real talk. Ey, is Elizabeth still hooking you up?"
I shrugged, completely forgetting about the crow. "Clapz is meant to holla, init." But he was too busy rolling wid them wasteman
"Fabien's got the blue haze though, cheap as well."
"Nah it's all about the crow, no blue haze. Fuck that."
He laughed. "Blud, £20, and he weighed that shit."
I shook my head. "Don't care. None of that. I need to cut down anyway."
"Thank you! At least someone's thinking about their health. Good on you, man, no more weed." Chris patted my back and Ree's eyes widened.
"You smoke?"
I shrugged. "The odd time."
"Everyday. He's lying to you, Becc's." She shook her head in disappointment and D laughed.
"What's Marik saying though?" he questioned.
My hands tightened around the wheel at hearing that fucker’s name. I actually want to kill him, give him a taste of his own medicine. "You heard?" I asked quietly.
"Chris told me." Chris grunted and rested his head back. "Real talk though, are them man dumb?" D screwed. We felt the same way when it came to harming little children. At least I knew that Dwane and Christian had sense.
"They're searching and ting. They're on it hardcore," I informed.
He kissed his teeth. "They're on Marik’s nuts, bruv. Anything to please him."
"I already told them to go fuck themselves. I'm not part of that shit, they can count me out."
Ree cleared her throat. "Isn't Marik your dad's friend?" she asked. Almost forgot she was in the car. She looked at me as I peered ahead.
"They used to be. After dad found out I was working for him they fell out."
She nodded slowly. "So that's the business you used to hide from me?"
I shook my head. "That ain't even half of it, Ree."
"Where are we going?" Chris asked.
"West, I need some excitement."
He groaned. "All the way down there?"
"We're nearly there man." He shrugged and I put another mixtape in. D wound his window down and I turned the volume up full blast. Ree sighed and we talked all the way there. Soon I parked up and we all got out. She shivered and held herself protectively.
"It's too cold."
I held her and pulled her into me. "Once there's some alcohol in your system you'll be cool." I smiled and she kissed her teeth.
Kings Cross was live right about now; bare people walking about and most clubs were open. We managed to find a nice one, can't remember the name but it was calm. Some wine bar. I watched Chris as he downed his third glass of Vodka. Dwane went off to dance wid some chick while Ree found her way to ladies toilets. It was only me and this drunkard left.
I remember the last rave when that prick had Ree pinned against the wall like some culprit. Words can't even express how angry I was that day. I saw red, dark red—like the blood-type. If I never got dragged away by them man he would have been dead. I didn't want a repeat of that; I just wanted to enjoy myself tonight.
"Yo, Tempz, watch this," I turned to Chris who attempted to balance the shot glass on his head. I just sighed and left him to it.
"Ey, boss, refill yeah?"
The bartender turned to me and nodded. He poured some more Moet and I started backing it down, but stopped when I felt a hand rub over my shoulder. I turned and saw a middle-aged black woman with a face caked in make-up but a body to die for. I stared at her as she batted her eye-lashes at me. I knew she was going to try shit, these times man wasn't the slightest bit interested.
"You okay, big boy?" she asked loudly over the music.
I nodded and turned away, only to see her face near mine. She leaned on the counter and smiled provocatively. I knew her type, round these times they tend to come out from the shadows: women of the night. They'd do anything for a little bit of cash. Man ain't on tings like that. No chick's riding this and passing on HIV. Fuck that. She rubbed my back and I watched her closely, eyes narrowed.
"You here alone?"
I backed the last of the Moet and shook my head. "With friends."
She nodded and continued her caressing. "I see. What brings you here at these times?" I shrugged and she laughed. "You look good enough to eat. How old are you?"
"Eighteen."
"Mm, just the right age, too." She leaned closer and whispered, "want a quick fuck?"
I then smiled and pulled her nearer, resting my mouth close to her ear. "I'm looking to have a good time, not an STI. I suggest you get the fuck away from me, I'm taken."
She sputtered and gaped at me in shock. I smiled and she scoffed before cursing under her breath and storming off. I laughed to myself and asked for another refill. Chicks these days, they're hilarious. Prostitution wasn't the way forward, these girls have no respect. I felt someone tug at my hair. I spun around ready to punch the fucker but my face softened at the sight of Ree's warm smile.
"I wanna dance," she proposed. I was surprised at the offer; usually I had to talk her into it. Suddenly Christian clapped and stood up.
"Mans looking to draw some gyal real quick!" He started doing the robot, moving along to the beat as he approached a group of unsuspecting females. I shook my head and decided to let things pan out. Mum was right ‘bout the alcohol.
Ree slapped me on the arm to grab my attention once more. "C'mon, prick, one dance. I can't believe I'm asking."
"Neither can I."
She laughed and I finished my glass then we went to the dance floor. The tunes they played were average I guess; nothing in my rank, but still something reasonable to dance to. I pulled her close by her necklace and she gave me a sly grin as I held her hips and led her with the movement of my waist. She hung her arms loosely around my neck and our foreheads joined as we danced slowly. Reminded me of my first prom dance with a girl called Whitney, and fucking her in the toilets afterwards. Big mistake that was. With Ree it was a lot different, she was too good for things like that. We danced and I noticed she wouldn't stop staring at me.
"What?"
She shook her head. "Nothing, just that dimple."
"Good or bad thing?"
"Bad."
I smiled. "You're lying."
"Shut up and dance."
I laughed and ran my hands over her cushioned backside. She gave me a fiery look and I smiled in return. "You have no idea how big it is," I commented.
She scoffed and I laughed before placing both hands back on her hips. The song eventually changed and I backed against the far wall. Without further hesitation I spun her around and continued my movement.
"Whine for me, Ree," I whispered in her ear. She complied and gyrated her waist against me. I sighed and pushed against her. If this kept up, I'd have to take her right against this wall. Fortunately, we changed positions half-way through since she complained about her thighs shaking. I simply laughed and we danced to the up-beat music. The club was good; I actually did enjoy myself overall. This was definitely a night to remember.
When we got back Chris was off his head. The house was quiet but it was obvious that no-one was asleep just yet. Rebecca shrugged out of her jacket and lazily hung it on the banister before heading upstairs. I went to the living-room and saw Shavonne and Zaine fast asleep on the chair.
"Hop up out the beddddd, turn my swag ornnnn, took a look at the mirror said wassurp!" I turned and saw Chris stood in front of the mirror trying on my mum’s fur coat. I sighed and closed the door so he wouldn't wake them. He was laughing to himself for no reason at all.
"It's getting late," D announced.
"You lot going?"
"Yeah, have a good day man," Chris said spudding me.
"The days over, it's like two in the morning."
He shrugged. "I'll bell you."
"You don’t want a lift?" I offered.
"Nah, I'll take him," Dwane said. "He's out of it, look at him."
Chris laughed. "Nonsense Da-waaaneee!" He slapped D's face and rubbed his hand all over. We both stared.
"Get home safe yeah?" He nodded. "Make sure he goes into the right house."
He laughed and they said their goodbyes. Once they left I picked Zaine and Vonne upstairs and tucked them into Zaine's bed. I headed to my room to see Ree sat on my bed going through her phone. I smiled.
"Hey." She glanced up me and gave a weak smile. I closed the door behind me. "You okay sweet-cheeks?"
She gave me a displeased look. "You've had one too many."
"Nah nah, I ain't had enough." I approached the bed and sat beside her. She sighed and I stroked her leg slowly. I couldn't help but admire her thick chocolate thighs. "You alright?" She nodded and kept quiet, which was odd for her, but I weren't complaining. I kissed the crook of her neck and licked it. She tasted nice. She shivered and I ran my hand up her arm. Goosebumps appeared on the surface of her skin. "You're cold," I whispered. She didn’t reply. I bit her neck and she took a deep breath.
"Stop," she muttered.
"I wanna have fun, Ree. You said later, it's later. Let's have fun." I kissed her lips softly and her muscles relaxed. I pushed her backwards and rested between her legs. We kissed for ages; I revelled in the feel of her soft lips on mine. I could never get enough of her kisses. I grinded on her slowly and she sighed, pulling me closer and clinging onto my arm.
"You’re tipsy," she rasped quietly.
"Even if I was sober we’d be doing this."
She gulped audibly and gripped onto my shirt. "Kayden..." she breathed deeply
"Should I get the whipped cream?"
She laughed. "No," she said softly. I kissed her and she held my neck. "What if someone comes?"
"The only one who should come is you." Her eyes widened and smiled at her reaction before kissing her again, this time sliding my tongue in her mouth. She stroked my neck as I grinded on her harder. I wanted her to feel me. If she could comply right now that would make the best present, but I wouldn't force her.
She broke away from the kiss and breathed heavily. Her skin was beginning to burn and her breaths became shallow. I moved down to her neck and kissed her heated skin gently, massaging her breast through her top. She rested her head back and released soft moans. She shuddered when I bit onto her skin and nibbled. Her reactions were the best right now. I smiled against her neck as I felt her legs quiver.
"Wait, Kayden, stop."
I paused and watched her. She looked troubled. "What's wrong?"
"I've been thinking..."
I raised a brow. "About what?"
"Something's bothering me."
I kissed her cheek. "What is it?"
"Olivia. Why did you fuck her?"
I froze and she glared at me, awaiting an answer. "How do you know about that?"
She looked away. "Olivia," she mumbled.
I smoothed her hair back to get a better view of her face. "It wasn't anything serious. I needed it and she was there."
She tutted angrily. "She's had sex with a lot of people, Kayden. What if you catch something?"
I cupped her face gently. "I used protection. I know better." She rolled her eyes and I frowned. "Is that what's bothering you?"
"It's one of the things."
"What's the other thing?"
"Doesn't matter. I just didn't think you'd stoop that low."
I sighed dejectedly. "It was a long time ago, I didn't know any better. I don't plan to do anything with any other girl." She stared unconvinced and I kissed her lips softly. "Don't worry about it; I won't be seeing her again."
"Yeah, no-one will."
"What?"
"Nothing." She smiled. "Happy birthday, by the way."
I laughed. "A bit late for that."
"I never said it before. But don't get happy; after this you'll just be a prick to me as always."
I nodded. "I can take that. You staying the night?"
"Yeah. It's late anyway. I just don't have a change of clothes."
"You can wear mine." She nodded and I kissed her lips softly. "Mm, can I have another present?"
"What?"
I kissed her neck. "I want another present from you," I said quietly.
"Wasn't the chain enough?"
"More than, but I want your body." I pinched her side and she yelped in laughter. I then sucked on her neck, biting it gently. She giggled and held onto me, moaning softly as I caressed her.
"We can’t do that," she mumbled breathlessly.
"Enough fucking around, Rebecca. You’re such a tease. I can’t put up with it anymore."
She gave a little smile. "I’m not."
"Yeah? The way you were whinin’ today, I could’ve stripped you naked and taken you against the wall."
"So why didn’t you?"
My fingers traced her soft lips as I considered her words. "I restrained myself."
"So did I."
I raised a brow and I noticed the shy look she gave. I licked my lips and gazed down at her. "So what you sayin’?"
She shrugged and looked away. "Dunno. Maybe I’m slyly tipsy as well."
"That doesn’t matter to me." I traced my hand down her body and she stiffened when I reached her legs. "Are you saying I can have this?" I asked, running my hand between her thighs. She shut her eyes and gasped.
"I’m not saying you can’t have it," she muttered.
I felt my piece twitch in my boxers. "You’re playing a dangerous game, Ree." I unzipped her jeans and slipped my hand inside. She was wet already. "Can I have this for my birthday?" I asked again. She fell silent. I pressed on her clit with my thumb and her body jolted. "Answer me," I whispered.
A vibration sounded, causing us to stop. We watched each other for a few seconds before she looked away and grabbed her phone. I sighed in defeat and climbed off her, now horny as fuck; my jeans have never felt so uncomfortable. She fixed her trousers and I noticed her face drop when she looked at her phone.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"My uncle’s asking where I am."
"Then tell him."
"Nah, he'll just bother me." I chuckled. "It's not funny. I don't think you can come round anymore either. He'd interrogate you."
I shrugged. "He can't be that bad."
"Exactly, he's worse. He'll ask about your history, your home life, your family, your future, your job, your background, heritage, where your parents are from, your siblings, your sex life, if we were together..."
I smiled at the last part. "What if I said yes?"
"He'd want to hurt you. Don’t you understand that he's worse than my dad?"
"We're friends Ree, he can't kill me."
"It's because we're friends why he'd want to kill you." I laughed hard. This man was like the black version of Liam Neeson.
"I'm still willing to risk it."
She shrugged. "Alright, it's your life." I poked her nose and she slapped my hand away. We both got up and headed downstairs to the kitchen. I hadn't realised that mum and dad were both awake, sat at the table talking. They both smiled at Ree.
"Staying then?" mum asked. She nodded in response. I poured her a glass of apple juice and handed it over as she was complaining I gave her a dry throat. These times it was due to all the sensual dancing at the club.
"How was the club?" dad questioned.
"Live; it was packed out."
"It's West, it's always packed. Full of prostitutes and drug dealers." He kissed his teeth and mum nodded in agreement.
"There wasn't any trouble, was there?"
"Nah, nothing like that. We had a good time."
"Mmhm!" Ree added; her speech muffled as she continued to down the apple juice.
"Did Chris get home okay?" mum wondered.
"Probably ended up in a dustbin," dad muttered. We all laughed then the phone rang. Immediately my chest tightened and an odd feeling washed over me. Something was about to happen...something bad. Mum swirled her glass around and took a sip of her wine before answering with a cheerful grin on her face.
"Hello?"
"...."
"Oh, hi Trey."
"...."
"Yeah, he's right here."
"...."
"I'll tell him you said that. Kamillah came round, she asked for you."
"...."
"Yeah, you should give her a call. Is everything alright, how is she?"
"...."
She froze and hastily put the wine glass down. "What?"
"...."
Her eyes widened. "No...no!"
I stiffened, as well as dad and Ree. After Uncle Trey mentioning something else on the phone, she gasped loudly and dropped the phone. Dad stood up and she started crying. Dad pulled her into a hug.
"What is it? What's wrong?" he asked holding onto her as she writhed in panic. Ree turned to me worriedly, awaiting the news. I could already tell. I knew from the start. My breathing increased and I found my eyes narrowing. I saw red.
"NO!" Mum screamed into dad's shirt.
He rubbed her back consolingly, trying to calm her down. "What's happened, Riah?"
"She's dead! Tanisha's dead, Marcus!" She sobbed and clung to his t-shirt in desperation. Dad picked the phone up and placed it back on the stand.
Silence.
My heart was racing.
Ree lightly held my arm. "Kayden..." she spoke softly.
My temperature rose in a matter of seconds and my heart thudded loudly in my chest. I felt my veins pulsate fiercely in my temple. I was losing control. I clenched my fists and gritted my teeth. Mum slid to the floor and dad held her, comforting her and rocking her gently as she wept. He told her it was gonna be okay. But it wasn't, was it? This was it. She's gone. She's dead.
I swung and punched the closest thing near me, leaving a deep dent in the centre of the wall. My knuckles throbbed and my jaw clenched. Ree shifted away and without any words, I left the kitchen. I went to the front door and opened it then began walking. Where? Fuck knows. I just wanted to get away from it all. Away from the pain. Away from mums crying. Everything. I knew today shouldn't have been about me. This was the last chance to see her again, for the very last time. But what do I do? Fucking go clubbing.
FUCK SAKE!
I paced down the road and kicked a bin down that was in my path. I wanted to kill someone. My thoughts were a messed up turmoil, I didn't know who to blame besides myself. Just picturing her in my mind, weak and fragile, coughing up blood and lying there lifeless. The image was too much to bear. My breathing deepened and my nails began to indent my palms as I clenched my fists harder. I couldn't stop, I wanted to wreck something. The adrenaline rush was building. I had to wreck something...
"Kayden!" I heard a faint shout in the background. Rebecca's footsteps became louder as she neared me. Once she finally caught up to me, she walked beside me, peering at me inquisitively. I refused to look at her, I continued walking. "Where are you going?" I ignored her completely and paced onwards. Suddenly she gripped onto my arm. "Stop!"
"She's fucking dead, Ree! SHE'S DEAD!" People from across the road stopped to look at me.
Ree held my arms firmly and stared me in the eyes. "I'm so sorry," she muttered quietly.
It started to rain, and my cheeks became wet. She hugged me tight but I stood there frozen.
She's gone. My auntie’s dead. She's been taken away from me. After awhile I hugged her back and only then did I realise...
It wasn't raining...
I was just crying.
